After recent extreme heat forced a postponement of the January FBKRT’s Social Wednesday Ride, members were keen to get back on the trail when the revised date of 4 February rolled around — and the enthusiasm certainly showed.

Thirteen riders gathered at Coffee Storm, located in the Baptist Church car park at Junortoun, ready to enjoy milder conditions. From there, the group set off to join the nearby O’Keefe Rail Trail, with the Axedale Tavern pencilled in as the coffee stop. At the same time, a second group of FBKRT riders departed from Knowsley, also aiming to meet up at the Tavern.

With pleasant weather and steady riding, the Junortoun group made good time, reaching the Longlea Lane trail facility for a short break. Many riders were surprised to see the off-road car park almost full — a popular location. The reason soon became clear: the local Wednesday Wabblers cycling group was also out enjoying the trail. Their 22-strong group had started earlier, riding from Longlea Lane to Axedale and back, and many were just finishing up as FBKRT riders arrived. With both groups and other trail users sharing the path, the O’Keefe Rail Trail was buzzing with activity that morning.

Once at the Axedale Tavern, coffee orders were taken and riders relaxed in the outdoor dining area, catching up over plenty of lively conversation. The return ride to Bendigo and Knowsley provided a bit more of a challenge, with temperatures rising and a warm headwind reminding everyone that summer was still very much in charge.
