Despite overcast skies, cool conditions and the threat of rain throughout the morning, a successful working bee organised by the Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail at the O’Keefe Rail Trail’s Longlea Lane facility was held. Fortunately, the rain stayed away and, once volunteers got to work, the chilly weather was quickly forgotten. In fact, it proved to be an ideal day for the task at hand.

The working bee was highly successful, with more than 400 various plants being planted. Following the event, staff from the City of Greater Bendigo’s Parks and Natural Reserves team sent a warm “thank you” email expressing appreciation for the volunteers’ efforts, along with a detailed list of the plant species planted — an impressive outcome for the morning’s work.

Adding to the enjoyable atmosphere, Friends member Rob provided morning tea featuring a delicious banana cake fresh from the oven, while member Pat supplied lovely chocolate slices. Volunteers enjoyed the refreshments, while chatting about the morning’s achievements.

While significant progress was made, the planting program is not yet fully complete. The next stage will involve the planting of understory species, including Kangaroo Paw and Native Daisies, to create habitat and cover for small birds, lizards and other wildlife. These plantings will extend eastward along the side of the O’Keefe Rail Trail, from the popular Longlea Lane facility.

To complete the project, another working bee has been scheduled for Friday 22 May at 9.30am. There will also be a need for follow-up watering of the new plantings, with details to be advised when required. Interested in getting involved with the rail trail and its dedicated community group?
