The popular O’Keefe Rail Trail facility at Longlea Lane, Longlea, was a hive of activity on Friday, 24 April. A well-used starting point for riders and walkers, the site offers shelter and toilet facilities, making it a key access point for trail users.

Members of the Friends of the Bendigo–Kilmore Rail Trail, together with riders from the Bendigo TT Rider group, came together for a productive community working bee.

With the support of the City of Greater Bendigo’s Parks and Natural Reserves staff, volunteers focused on improving the site’s vegetation. Around 400 new plants were added, enhancing both the landscape and the long-term environmental value of the area.

Another important task addressed sections of the trail at this site that tended to hold stormwater after heavy rain, making the surface soft and sometimes difficult for lower skilled riders. Volunteers spread and then compacted additional gravel to improve the trail’s drainage and to create a smoother, more reliable surface for trail users.

Following the morning’s efforts, participants gathered to reflect upon their work over coffee at a Strathfieldsaye cafe.
