Trail Project Completed as Summer Temperatures Heat Up

Even as summer temperatures soared across central Victoria in early 2026, members of the Friends of the Bendigo–Kilmore Rail Trail (FBKRT) pressed ahead with their latest improvement project along the O’Keefe Rail Trail.

The project has seen two additional table–seat settings and bike racks installed between Junortoun and Axedale, at Wilkie Road and Giris Road — welcome additions for trail users seeking a rest stop along this popular section. Funding was both from a City of Greater Bendigo community grant, in addition to funds and volunteer efforts from this community Friends group.

Project Coordinator Paul was delighted to welcome nine volunteers to the Giris Road site for a 7:30am start — wisely timed to beat the day’s forecast heat. With truckloads of “Axedale gravel” already delivered, volunteers set to work spreading and compacting the gravel around the concrete slabs that they had poured at a December working bee.

With the Wodonga manufacturer’s delivery truck and installers due at 11:30am to secure the table settings to the slabs, there was little time for idle conversation. The installation proceeded smoothly and efficiently, and it wasn’t long before some members were happily “road-testing” the new seats. As always, the morning’s efforts concluded in true FBKRT style — with a well-earned cuppa and some freshly baked cake, thanks to Paul’s earlier cooking efforts and much-appreciated hospitality.

These new facilities are another example of what dedicated community volunteers can achieve, helping to make the trail experience even more enjoyable for all users.
