The excitement coming from within the Rushworth community is being experienced, with the outcome of converting the former railway line reserve into a rail trail now just days away. The Campaspe Shire has announced that the new section of the Waranga Rail Trail will be open for public use on Tuesday 1st April.
Being a total of 19 km, this off-road rail trail has been sought by the Rushworth Events community group and other individuals for many years, to connect their town with a 9 km trail section the Greater Shepparton City Council completed about 10 years ago. The $3.7M Rushworth section project has been jointly funded by the Campaspe Shire Council and Federal government grants. The off-road trail now will link Rushworth and Murchison, with both regional Victorian townships’ communities and businesses eager to provide services for rail trail users.
A related council news release is available, as well as the project’s detailed information. Further extensions of the trail are possible, with the former railway branch line once connecting Rushworth to Colbinabbin and Rushworth to Stanhope and Girgarre (the Girgarre – Stanhope Rail Trail). An official opening of this latest constructed section by the council will take place on 17 May at 10am in Rushworth.
