The Friends members reflect on Super Tuesday efforts, over a coffee

A dedicated team of volunteers from the Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail (FBKRT) once again played a vital role in the annual Super Tuesday Bicycle Commuter Count, helping to collect valuable data on cycling patterns in Bendigo urban area as well as in Melbourne suburbs.

Supporting Sustainable Transport

Super Tuesday, Australia’s largest annual bicycle count, is coordinated by Bicycle Network to gather essential data on commuter cycling trends. The information helps councils and advocacy groups plan for improved cycling infrastructure and promote sustainable transport. Volunteers count cyclists at key locations during peak commuting hours, identifying trends in rider numbers, gender balance, and route preferences. This year, such recording included separating gender, e-bikes, and e-scooters.

A Strong Volunteer Effort

“Volunteering for Super Tuesday is a great way for us to advocate for better cycling conditions,” said Adrian Cummins, President of the FBKRT. “The data collected supports the case for improved bike infrastructure, ultimately making cycling safer and more attractive for everyone.”

The Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail welcome new members and volunteers who share their passion for cycling advocacy. Whether it’s participating in events like Super Tuesday, helping maintain trails, join monthly ride activities, or supporting O’Keefe Rail Trail projects, there are many ways to get involved.
