National Tree Day recently saw a number of volunteers from the Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail join with the Junortoun Community Action Group for a tree planting day at the Honeyeater Bushland Reserve.
800 native trees and under-storey plants were planted, guarded and watered. A great effort by about 30 volunteers.
For those unaware of the history associated with the reserve, Honeyeater Bushland Reserve is a 17-hectare nature reserve in Junortoun, and managed by the Junortoun Community Action Group. The Reserve is located on Honeyeater Lane, between Binks Road and Somerset Park Road in Junortoun. It borders the Strathfieldsaye Bushland Reserve (24ha), and a 15.8ha reserve owned and managed by the City of Greater Bendigo. The site is close to Knul-doorong Woodland and the O’Keefe Rail Trail. It is the site of a former quarry and is land that has experienced significant human-influenced disturbance and degradation over many years.
The Honeyeater Bushland Reserve is easily accessed from the O’Keefe Rail Trail, from Binks Rd or Somerset Park Rd (map).
