News of community members coming together to improve access along a section of the former Heathcote Junction to Bendigo railway line has created anticipation in the Mitchell Shire area. Interest in developing a Wallan – Kilmore trail has further increased, since the North Central Review newspaper published details of this trail blazing activity.

The area is right at the top of the Great Dividing Range, where steam locos with their loaded wagons once struggled to cross the range. A 1.2km section of this former railway line has been ‘locked up’ for more than half a century, allowing remnant native tree and plant species to create an appealing natural environment where an off-road trail will provide a safe enjoyable experience.

Since the newspaper’s coverage, local community members have been inquiring as to how they may support the effort or volunteer at the next working bee. It is intended in early 2022 that further community work will take place to improve access along the 1.2km section, as well as identify and remove many of the invasive plants and woody weeds.
