A strong spirit of participation and community support was on display during a Friends of the Bendigo–Kilmore Rail Trail’s working bee held on 12 December. Despite the warm summer weather, dedicated volunteers turned out to contribute their time and effort to improving the O’Keefe Rail Trail.

The main task for the day was pouring a concrete slab that will soon support a new table–seat unit for trail users in the Junortoun area. Positioned near the trail’s popular Wilkie Road car park — alongside the trail’s existing water station and bike maintenance stand — the site also being close to the historic Strathfieldsaye Railway Station’s location, all this making for an attractive and convenient starting or rest point for walkers and riders.

This project’s installation is the first of two table–seat units that are funded from a successful community grant being awarded to the Friends group, by the City of Greater Bendigo council. The second unit is to be installed beside the rail trail near Giris Lane, Longlea, with a planned completion in the new year.
