Trail Feasibility Study Commitment

Clare Malcolm is committed to developing off-trails in the Mitchell Shire Council and the City of Greater Bendigo Council areas. Clare, the Labor candidate for Euroa, understands the benefits that rail trails can do for regional economies, tourism and the health of communities.
Together with Jacinta Allan, Shadow Minister for Rural and Regional Development and the member for Bendigo East, they announced that if the Labor Party is elected to govern at the 29th Nov State Government elections, then that elected government would commit to funding a feasibility study for the proposed Wandong-Wallan to Heathcote Rail Trail.

Speaking at the announcement, against the background of the imposing historic former Mollison Creek timber railway bridge, “We’re taking the first steps down the Wandong to Bendigo Rail Trail.” said Clare Malcolm, “I’d be proud to be a part of a Labor Government that makes it happen.”
The rapid growth in cycle tourism worldwide, and the need to seize the opportunities for regional Victoria is well understood by Jacinta Allen, a passionate supporter of rail trails and getting more people to cycle. “The rail trail will combine our history, our environment and our heritage” said Ms Allan, “I want more tourists from around Australia to visit our great part of the world.”
Mitchell Shire Mayor Cr. Rodney Parker was pleased to respond to this announcement. Mayor Parker indicated that his Council supported this off-road trail proposal, which would assist improve the health and wellbeing of the Mitchell Shire communities, by encouraging active outdoor participation in walking and cycling by community members.
In becoming Victoria’s only long distance 100+km rail trail with a passenger rail service at each end, plus direct linkages with other regional trails, this rail trail would become an major factor in boosting regional tourism in this area.
