It was a great occasion for the Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail to receive a community grant for the O’Keefe Rail Trail.

Fosterville Gold Mine’s 2023 Community Grant had received 50 applications, with 9 grants being awarded.

This received grant of $5,000 will fund a project to design, manufacture, and install additional interpretive signs along the O’Keefe Rail Trail. The following are the initial four sites that are recommended for those interpretive signs:

1. The Gangers Hut, at Rifle Butts railway siding, East Bendigo

2. A brick lined water well, near Hodges Lane, Junortoun

3.  The railway wagon at the former Axedale Station, Axedale

4.  Burke & Wills Expedition’s crossing point of the now rail trail, Knowsley

The trail’s manager, City of Greater Bendigo council, will be consulted in finalising details for this funded project, with other points of interest considered for signage.

Fosterville Gold Mine is thanked for its continual commitment to the local community, as well as recognising the importance of providing improvements along the popular O’Keefe Rail Trail.
