How to maintain a bike and gain riding skills were some of the key features of a practical lesson for students at the Heathcote Primary School.

Principle Kate Ballantyne sought the assistance of the Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail to impart the required knowledge. Three members plus Sam Cummins from Wheel House Bikes, Kilmore, volunteered their time to the school.

Bicycle education for school children offers various benefits, including promoting physical activity, teaching valuable life skills, and enhancing road safety awareness. This knowledge also fosters independence and contributes to environmental consciousness.

The students’ enthusiasm was high, putting their new knowledge into practice. With the O’Keefe Rail Trail bordering the school, it hoped that the trail would become the first choice for students commuting to and from school.
