It’s more than just a new look for the 167 year old Axedale Tavern, now that the iconic verandah has been fully rebuilt. The pub is an important community hub for Axedale’s local residents, as well as a country attraction for passing visitors.
With Axedale being the near mid point of the O’Keefe Rail Trail, the Tavern often becomes the ‘rest stop’ for the trail’s cyclists and walkers. “Both the rail trail and the Tavern are well connected!” said Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail President Colin Scott, “Tavern owner Garry Van Wynen recognises the efforts that our community group have achieved for both the trail and its links with Axedale and Heathcote.”
The Friends group is proud of its community connections, its achievements, as well as the challenges of planning trail expansions. Enjoying regular cycling and social activities, the group welcomes the involvement of new members and families.
