The month of July should see machinery start moving into Heathcote to construct the trail through the township. This is really exciting news, as it will be the first major extension of the trail and really marks out the target for the section between Axedale and Heathcote.

The new section of trail will run from Pink Cliffs Road through the town to Speed Street, a distance of around 5 km. Further to the west, the first old railway bridge that crosses Wattle Creek, beyond Flea Street, will be initially bypassed at this stage. A possible  bridge restoration or replacement will be considered later in the project.

Bypass: the Wattle Creek bridge near Flea Street will not be restored in the first phase of works to seal the trail. That possibility will be examined at a later date.
