Box ironbark forests and the remnants of historical buildings were part of a monthly ride for Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail members. The ride commenced at the Maiden Gully Community Centre, then headed off into a southeastern area of forest adjoining Maiden Gully.

Rider leader Greg provided a fascinating commentary about the history of the area, including an old eucalyptus distillery and the remains of several stone cottages, probably from an early mining or wood cutting era.

Of course, such a ride needs to include a rest stop for reflections over a coffee. After cycling 23kms, Balgownie Estate Bendigo was the destination. This is a winery of 33-hectares overlooking Myer’s Creek and was established in 1969 by Stuart Anderson. https://www.balgownie.com/bendigo

Riders rested under the shade of old English Ash trees while enjoying coffee and the picturesque view of this season’s maturing grapes. All present enjoyed both the ride, the mild summer weather, as well as the social gathering.
